CHAPTER NINE

To Kelly’s disappointment, Alice was nowhere in sight. The good news, the colonel was still out with his group, thus avoiding the men crossing paths...at least for now. George was talking with Terrance at the registration window, and Kelly was going to hang out in the lobby to keep an eye on him, but Julie walked out of the office and headed straight toward her.

“Mrs. Landers has an emergency,” Julie said. “Apparently, the dress she was planning on wearing tomorrow is wrinkled and it has a small tear that needs to be mended.”

Kelly cringed. She had very little experience ironing. Her mother had made sure that sewing was part of her classwork, but she was by no means, an expert. Mrs. Landers was the wife of a very wealthy merchant from New York. All of her clothes were in the latest style and very expensive. Kelly had never touched material that was so delicate and intricately designed.

“Mr. Sousa tuned the piano this afternoon, so we are going to have music in the salon after dinner tonight,” Julie continued, completely unaware that Kelly was freaking out. “That means you will need to be available at least until the music has ended and the guests start heading to bed.”

“Of course,” Kelly agreed, but her thoughts were still stressing over taking care of Mrs. Landers. After two days, the woman’s petty demands had already made her Kelly’s least favorite guest. She didn’t want to see how disagreeable the woman would be if her dress was ruined.

Julie hurried off. There were probably a hundred other issues on her mind, and now that she had offloaded Mrs. Landers’ dress, she was moving on to the next problem.

Kelly looked around and saw that George was no longer in sight. He had either gone up to his room or was out looking for Emma, but either way, she didn’t have the time to find him. She wished she dared go to Alice’s room and warn her. It couldn’t help but be a shock for her to see George here, at the hotel, but Kelly knew that intervening was inappropriate and could possibly make things worse. Austin was right...she should just stay out of it.

Of course, she couldn’t stay out of it.

The whole time she was mending the rip that was much larger than she had expected, thoughts of how to get George and Alice to make up ran through her mind. Luckily, the rip was on the inner layer and there was a gauzy layer on top that was almost opaque, so the repair was only noticeable if you knew exactly where to look. The bigger problem was figuring out how the iron worked. It was electric, but there was no thermostat to control the heat and no steam feature...a modern-day convenience that hadn’t yet been invented, which was ironic considering that the cars were steam powered. Kelly tested it on the underside of the delicate fabric, which turned out to be a smart move because the iron left a small scorch mark.
